Birth Assistant Workshop
This course is designed for women who want to work as midwifery assistants in homebirth or out-of-hospital settings. Certified Birth Assistants can work in home birth or free-standing birth centers throughout the U.S. and internationally under the supervision of a certified or licensed midwife. Skills and Training
Intro to Birth - Learn what is normal during labor and postpartum and how to attend and support women through her labor process and postpartum.
Fetal Monitoring - Learn how to use a fetal Doppler, learn how to take fetal heart rate, and learn normal fetal heart tone rates and sounds.
Documentation and Terminology- Learn how to keep proper records during a birth and postpartum.
Vital Signs - Learn how to take blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respirations. Learn what is normal and when to take action.
Medications- Learn about different types of medication used, learn when they should be used and how to prepare them for the midwife.
Communication and Support- Learn how to interact and serve a family going through the labor and birth process.
Breastfeeding - Learn basics of breastfeeding and counseling.
Complications During Labor - Learn the complications that can arise during the labor, delivery, and postpartum phase.
Basic Emergency Response Skills- Learn the basics of neonatal resuscitation, CPR, and how to assist the midwife in an emergency.
